How to upgrade to MAC OSX Sonoma from OSX Ventura

1. Make a backup. Before upgrading, it's a good idea to make a backup. If you have an external storage device, you can use it  back up your Mac with Time Machine. If you don't have an external drive, then you can use a thumb drive or use the Google Cloud.

          2.Which macOS is installed?

From the Apple menu  in the upper-left corner of your screen, choose About This Mac. The window that opens might look different from the example shown here, but it always includes the macOS name followed by its version number. If you need to know the build number as well, click the version number to see it.

This example shows About This Mac on a Mac mini with macOS Sonoma 14.0:

3. Make sure that your device has Storage Space enough for the download and install. Typical upgrades require 8 to 10 Gb of space, so make sure that you have enough space available or else the upgrade will fail.

  1. In addition, it is required that your device be at least 50% full on your battery. It is recommended to have your device with plenty of battery and plugged in to avoid any upgrade issues.

4. Download and install macOS Sonoma.Use Software Update to download and install the latest version of macOS Sonoma. It's the fastest and easiest way to get macOS upgrades, and it might require less storage space to download and install.

  1. From the Apple menu  in the corner of your screen, choose System Settings. Click General in the sidebar, then click Software Update on the right.

  2. Or in earlier versions of macOS, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Software Update.

  3. Or use SpotlightNo alt supplied for Image in your menu bar to search for “Software Update,” then open it from the search results.

5. When you open Software Update, it automatically begins checking for new software.

  1. If new software is available for your Mac, click the button to Update or Upgrade. What's the difference between an update and upgrade?

  2. If new software is not available for your Mac, Software Update says that your Mac is up to date. Software Update shows only software that is compatible with your Mac model. For example, if your Mac is not compatible with a later version of macOS or Safari, Software Update does not offer it to you. Which Mac models are compatible?

  3. Before installation begins, you will be asked to enter your administrator password. It's the password you use to log in to your Mac. If you do not have a password on your machine, then you will need to create a simple password that you can remember like “Bluejeans.”

Once you have a password, then you can proceed with the upgrade process. Please note that you can always remove a password, once the upgrade process is completed.

6. The computer will warn you that it needs to reboot and then it will reboot and then it will reboot and the screen will turn black and indicate a progress percentage.

  1. When your upgrade is complete, it will tell you it is complete and the screen will look similar to this:
